single vs. single family Similac: Main differences
While both Enfamil and Similac have many similarities, both brands of baby food have some important differences. We will take a closer look at their differences later in this article, but here is a summary of the main differences between them.
- Standard milk-based baby food:Enfamil NeuroPro (Enfamil's standard milk formula) contains a milk fat globule membrane that is more like breast milk and slightly higher levels of certain fatty acids.
- Gentle formulas for babies:Similac and Enfamil formulas designed specifically for fussy children are based on different protein sources: Pro-Total Comfort by Similac contains 100% whey protein and Gentlease by Enfamil contains 60% whey and 40% casein.
- Children's formulas to spit out:Similac claims its spitting formula reduces spitting episodes by 54%, while Emfamil claims that it reduces spitting by 50% with its spitting formula.

Standard milk-based formula: Enfamil NeuroPro vs. Similac Advance
Unless they are breastfeeding or otherwise using human milk, most parents in the United States rely on formulaMother's milk substitutefeed your young. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that bottle-fed infants be given iron-fortified milk-based formulas.
Healthcare professionals will look for alternatives if a child cannot tolerate formula, but standard formula formulas are usually the starting point, explains Dyan Hes, a pediatrician in New York City.
"We always start with cow's milk because all the sugar is lactose, which is the same as [in] breast milk," she says. The more closely a formula can mimic the composition of breast milk, the better it is for babies.
Simil forward
Similac Advance is a milk-based preparation enriched with iron, which contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) - omega-3 fatty acid - lutein and vitamin E to better support the infant's neurological development. The brand proudly omit palm oil in an attempt to increase calcium absorption, although it's worth noting that research shows the compound is found naturally in breast milk and has no negative effects on developing babies.
Cost:$1.41 each
Main ingredients:
- Low fat milk
- Lactose
- Whey protein concentrate
- High oil safflower oil
- I am oil
- Coconut oil
- Galactooligosaccharides (prebiotics)
Enfamil Neuropro
What sets Enfamil NeuroPro apart is its emphasis on brain- and eye-stimulating fatty acids. The World Health Organization recommends infant formulas contain between 0.3% and 0.5% DHA for brain health. This Enfamil formulation contains 0.32%.
Cost:$1.57 each
Main ingredients:
- Low fat milk
- Lactose
- Vegetable Oil (Palm Olein, High Oleic Coconut, Soybean and Sunflower Oils)
- Whey protein concentrate
- Concentrate of whey proteins and lipids
Winner: Enfamil NeuroPro
While the Advance and NeuroPro formulas seem to have a similar ingredient list, Enfamil NeuroPro has a winning edge: something called Milk Fat Globule Membrane (MFGM).
MFGM is a substance found naturally in breast milk fat that helps this formula mimic the properties of breast milk, says Delene P. Musielak, MD, a pediatrician in St. Louis. Study inJournal of Pediatricsfound that consuming infant formula supplemented with bovine MFGM and bovine lactoferrin accelerated children's language, cognitive and motor development.
Dr. Musielak also notes that Enfamil NeuroPro contains slightly higher levels of both DHA and arachidonic acid (ARA), an omega-6 fatty acid. These fatty acids are essential for baby's eye and brain development, although she also notes that research has not come to firm conclusions about the long-term benefits of consuming higher levels of these fatty acids during childhood.
"Parents should use the formula that their child tolerates best and is most affordable for the family," says Dr. Musielak, who points out that one formula is not necessarily better than the other. However, if finding the option closest to breast milk is important to you, Enfamil NeuroPro has the upper hand in this comparison.
Delicate formula for babies: Similac Pro Total Comfort versus Familie Gentlease
While most pediatricians start with standard milk-based formulas, Dr. Musilak that they may recommend switching to soft varieties if parents report some of the following symptoms:
- Gaz
- Digestive problems
- Colic and excessive irritability
- Lactose sensitivity
Soft or partially hydrolyzed formulas are easier for small stomachs to digest as they already break down the protein molecules in the milk. According to Bridget Young, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, New York, gentle formulas can mimic breast milk even more in terms of protein size. Serenity Kids whole milk for toddlers
"On average, human milk proteins are smaller than cow's milk proteins," says Dr. Young. "Thus, partially hydrolyzed formulas deliver proteins that are closer in size to human milk proteins than standard proteins."
However, because they contain casein and whey, even gentle formulas are not suitable for children with a true milk allergy.
Similac Pro total komfort
The Similac Pro-Total Comfort formula uses 100% partially hydrolyzed whey protein, which may be gentler on some tummies. Regarding this occasion, Dr. He is impressed by Similac's inclusion of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), prebiotics naturally present in breast milk that provide immune, gastrointestinal and cognitive support.
Cost:$1.50 per ounce (in CVS)
Main ingredients:
- Corn maltodextrin
- Whey protein hydrolyzate
- High oil safflower oil
- Sugar
- I am oil
- Coconut oil
Enfamil Gentlease
Gentlease aims to be easier on little tummies and features partially hydrolyzed skimmed milk and whey protein. Aimed at infants struggling with digestive issues, this formula is designed to reduce the gas and fuss that often accompany them.
Cost:$1.45 each
Main ingredients:
- Solid corn syrup
- Partially hydrolyzed skimmed milk and whey protein concentrate solids (soy)
- Vegetable Oil (Palm Olein, High Oleic Coconut, Soybean and Sunflower Oils)
- Calcium phosphorus
Winner: Similac Pro-Total Comfort
When it comes to comparing Pro-Total Comfort and Gentlease, one isn't necessarily better than the other - it's all about testing and choosing the option that is easier for your child to tolerate, says Dr. Young.
Both formulas have different sources of protein, which can affect baby's comfort: Gentlease uses a partially hydrolyzed blend of 60% whey and 40% casein, while Pro-Total Comfort contains 100% whey protein that is partially hydrolyzed. Dr. Young also notes differences in carbohydrate and fat sources, again explaining that the parent's decision should be based on the child's preferences.
But if you're dealing with a lactose intolerant child, Dr. It is for the Pro-Total Comfort formula. In addition to valuable HMOs, this variety also contains only 2% lactose compared to 20% in Gentlease.
Babyformel do Spit Up: Enfamil AR vs. Similac Spit-Up
Spitjust part of new parenthood. Poorly developing digestive systems are to blame, but with good weight gain and lots of wet diapers (about six to eight a day), pediatricians often find no cause for concern.
“If it affects the child's quality of life and/or interferes with sleep, we may consider ittransfer formulas, says Dr. Hoarse. "Many babies are happy to spit up and don't need to change the formula...if the baby isn't growing or gaining weight well, we can switch to a formula that prevents spitting up."
Similac do Spit-Up
Similac claims that spitting formula reduces spitting episodes by 54% in healthy 2-month-old infants compared to infants fed with standard milk-based formulas. This formula uses extra rice starch to aid in spitting up and contains a blend of DHA, Lutein and Vitamin E to support baby's neurological development.
Cost:Previously $1.28 an ounce (currently unavailable on Amazon)
Main ingredients:
- Maïssiroop
- Modified rice starch
- Milk protein isolate
- High oil safflower oil
- Sugar
- I am oil
- Coconut oil
- Galactooligosaccharides (prebiotics)
Enfamil A.R.
Enfamil A.R. is a rice starch-thickened formula that is designed to reduce infant spitting up by up to 50%. This option contains the same recommended amount of DHA and ARA found in the brand's other formulations.
Cost:$1.35 each
Main ingredients:
- Low fat milk
- Vegetable Oil (Palm Olein, High Oleic Coconut, Soybean and Sunflower Oils)
- Rice starch
- Lactose
- maltodextrin
- Galactooligosaccharides (prebiotics)
- Polydextrose (prebiotics)
Winner: Similac for Spit-Up
First a warning: Dr. Musielak says both formulas contain a thickening agent called rice starch, which helps children retain fluid. Because these types are thicker than standard formulas and can clog bottles during feeding, Dr. Musielak's parents should use a bottle with a larger nipple size. It warns against cutting or reworking bottle caps yourself as you want to make sure they don't present a choking hazard when feeding.
Although the formulas are quite similar, especially in the way of reducing salivation, the increased effectiveness of Similac along with the lower price put it in the first place.
Parenting is complicated, it shouldn't be schematic
Bobbie Infant Formula is the only mother-owned infant formula company in the United States. Made with expert care, Bobbie is proud of the ingredients they put in and proud of what they left out.
Enfamil vs. Similac: different infant formulas
In addition to the above-mentioned preparations, both Enfamil and Similac offer preparations for infants with hypersensitivity to cow's milk proteins or other allergies.
In particular, Enfamil offers:
- Nutramigen with Enflora LGG powder.Made from comprehensively hydrolyzed proteins, this hypoallergenic formula is lactose free and contains DHA and ARA for brain and eye development. Enfamil also offers this formula in liquid form.
- PurAmino hypoallergenic powdered infant formula.Enfamil notes that this formula is for children with severe food allergies because it contains free amino acids.
Meanwhile, Similac offers the following products for food allergies:
- to like food. This hypoallergenic formula contains 2'-FL HMO - an ingredient that supports the immune system - and contains broken down protein that is easier for babies to digest. This formula is also available in ready-to-use bottles.
For those interested in organic formulas, both Similac and Enfamil also have options. Enfamil's Simply Organic formula contains USDA certified organic milk, while Similac Organic is non-GMO and contains organic milk and other ingredients.
Choose the best formula for your baby
Whichever baby food you choose, rest assured that the FDA has strict nutritional requirements that any approved product must meet. Ultimately, the choice of formula depends on your preferences - both yours and your baby's.
A good rule of thumb: "Make your decision based on the first few ingredients on the list," says Dr. Young. "They make up 98% of the formula and will have the biggest impact on your baby's comfort." She recommends ignoring marketing claims and going straight to the ingredients list and discussing with your pediatrician which options are best for your baby's digestive comfort.
Frequently Asked Questions (Frequently Asked Questions)
Is it worth switching from Similac to Enfamil?
Check with your pediatrician if you are interested in switching to a different brand of baby food. Due to the recent shortage of baby food, due in part to the voluntary recall of some Similac baby products, Enfamil has identified products on its website that may be suitable replacements.Expert attentionthat in cases where your child does not need a specialized formula, you should certainly be able to switch brands. However, check with your pediatrician first.
Why is there glucose syrup in baby food?
Enfamil notes that corn syrup is derived from corn and is made up of long chains of glucose. Not to be confused with high fructose corn syrup, solid corn syrup provides energy for babies.
Can I use a microwave oven to prepare baby food?
The FDA does not recommend heating formula or breast milk in the microwave as this can cause the liquid to heat unevenly and create hot spots that can burn your baby's mouth or throat.
What if my baby doesn't like bottle feeding?
Talk to your pediatrician if your baby is vomiting (but remember that some saliva is normal). If your baby has a tummy ache, he may be sensitive or allergic to cow's milk protein. Ask your pediatrician who can help diagnose the cause of your baby's discomfort.

FAQs
Enfamil vs Similac: Which Infant Formula Is Better? ›
The two formulas have different protein sources, which may affect your baby's comfort: Gentlease uses a partially hydrolyzed mix of 60% whey and 40% casein while the Pro-Total Comfort makes use of 100% whey protein that's been partially hydrolyzed.
Which is healthier Similac or Enfamil? ›Enfamil contains more vitamins C, B12, E, and K. Enfamil has more choline, pantothenic acid, folic acid, and inositol. Similac is a better source of copper. Similac has higher levels of thiamin, vitamin D, riboflavin, niacin, and biotin.
Does it matter what brand of formula I give my baby? ›No brand of infant formula is best for all babies. You should pick an infant formula that is made especially for babies. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates commercial infant formulas to make sure they meet minimum nutritional and safety requirements.
Which formula is closest to breast milk? ›Enfamil Enspire
Enfamil's Enspire Opens a new window is the brand's closest formula to breast milk, thanks to the inclusion of proteins found in colostrum, like lactoferrin. (In fact, Enspire is the first and only infant formula in the U.S. to include lactoferrin as an ingredient, according to the brand.)
1 Switching between formula brands is not a problem, even though many parents wonder if doing so may cause fussiness or stool changes in their baby. In fact, you can even mix different brands of the same type of formula together if you feel that your baby responds better to a mixture of one brand with another.
What formula do hospitals use? ›Similac Advance Newborn bottles are the same bottles used in hospitals- The Perfect Bottle® for your new baby.
What is the most bought formula? ›According to the AAP, cow's milk formula is the most prevalent type of formula on the market and makes up about 80% of all formulas sold.

There are many options out there, but when it comes to providing complete nutrition for your little one, Enfamil NeuroPro is our best baby formula. It has a total of 30 nutrients to support your baby's development.
Switching to a different formula brand is perfectly fine. "There is no danger in providing your baby with differing formulas from one day to the next, especially if they have the same base," says Dr. Swanson.
Is it OK to keep switching formula brands? ›
You won't harm your baby by changing brands, but if your baby balks when you switch (by showing a sudden disinterest in this new formula or refusing to finish their bottle) you may be able to introduce them to the new formula gradually rather than all at once.
How long to try formula before switching? ›Dr. Young suggests giving it at least a week or ten days. Granted, “Ten days is an extremely long time over a two month life!” so it may feel tenuous, but it's worth it to judge whether or not it made an improvement. Switching too rapidly doesn't give time for any healing to occur before an improvement can be observed.

Can I give my baby 2 different formulas? ›It's safe to mix and match infant formulas if you are following standard mixing instructions. Really. Although spitting up or gassiness is usually not due to the protein in formula (cow's milk versus soy versus hypoallergenic), sometimes changing formula helps new babies and their parents who worry.
How do I know if a formula is not good for my baby? ›- Diarrhea.
- Vomiting.
- Blood or mucus in your baby's stool.
- The baby often pulls her legs up toward her belly because of pain.
- Difficulty with weight gain or noticeable weight loss.
- Constant crying and signs of discomfort.
Most babies will do just fine with different brands of formula, including store brands, as long as they're the same type, like cow's milk-based, soy, hypoallergenic (extensively hydrolyzed), or elemental (amino acid-based).
What is the benefit of Enfamil? ›Enfamil Enspire Gentlease has gentle proteins and is for easing upset tummies within 24 hours. It offers brain-building MFGM and DHA, as well as lactoferrin, an immune-supporting protein also found in colostrum and breast milk. It's our best for your best.

Serious side effects of Enfamil D-Vi-Sol
Signs of high calcium levels like weakness, confusion, feeling tired, headache, upset stomach and throwing up, constipation, or bone pain.
Enfamil's price increases follow the expiration of the U.S. government's suspension of infant formula tariffs in January, which opened the door for formula (both foreign and U.S.-produced) to become more expensive.
What baby bottle is most like the breast? ›Lansinoh Momma Breastmilk Feeding Bottle
The nipple on this unique bottle is ergonomically designed to mimic a natural breast, helping baby to use the same sucking motion for each and easing the transition between breast and bottle.
How often should you change baby bottles? ›
Bottles should be cleaned after every feeding. If your baby does not finish drinking a bottle within 2 hours, throw away the unfinished formula. Germs can grow quickly if breast milk or formula is added to a partially used bottle, or if a used bottle is only rinsed, rather than cleaned.
How many baby bottles do I need for a newborn? ›If you're mostly bottle-feeding, you'll probably want eight to ten bottles, and if you're mostly breastfeeding, three or four should be enough. Start with 4- or 5-ounce bottles. They're perfect for the small amounts of breast milk or formula newborns eat in one sitting.
Does brand matter with formula? ›No randomized, head-to-head study shows that one brand is better for your baby than another. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend specific brands, but simply says that for infants receiving formula, cow's milk-based formulas should be the first choice for most babies.
Can you just change infant formula? ›Be sure to check the instructions on the formula packaging to make sure you are properly mixing the formula. Most babies will adjust to the new taste quickly and easily. How can I safely switch to a new formula? Most babies can change to a new formula without any problems.
Why is there no Enfamil formula? ›The lack of raw ingredients has forced manufacturers to slow production. To compound the formula shortage of 2022, the reduced volume of formula products that is being manufactured is taking longer to make its way onto store shelves. This is largely due to supply chain problems and labor shortages.
Can warm formula help with gas? ›Let the formula settle
Try using warm (but not hot) water, rather than cold or room temperature water, to help the formula dissolve more effectively and produce fewer bubbles.
Leave the water to cool in the kettle for no more than 30 minutes. Then it will stay at a temperature of at least 70C. Water at this temperature will kill any harmful bacteria. Remember to let the feed cool before you give it to your baby.
